Overview

The Cibrario Refuge is a historic building that has been extended several times over the years. It sits on the beautiful Pian Sabiunin plateau, at the foot of towering peaks that rise well above 3,000 metres. A key stopping point on the Tour della Bessanese and for the ascent of Croce Rossa, it can be reached from Usseglio via two routes: the shorter one starting from Alpe d'Arnas, currently impassable due to a landslide, and the historic route described on this page.

Directions

From the car park (fountain), go back a few dozen metres downhill, then take a grassy path that climbs left beside a house. The path heads uphill through the houses of Margone, crossing a mule track (fountain and votive pillar) and then a dirt track.

Continue along the path, which rejoins the dirt track further on. Follow it for a few dozen metres, then at the first switchback, take the shortcut again. After crossing the dirt track one last time, leave it for good and continue along the path as it climbs steeply through the woods.

Cross the clearing of the Alpe Trappette, and a little higher up, cross the old Decauville, a narrow-gauge railway built towards the end of the 1920s and now disused, which linked Malciaussia to Lake Dietro la Torre to transport materials for the construction of the dam. A section of rail still protrudes from the ground.

The path continues uphill along a steep slope with several natural steps. Rounding a spur, it is worth making a short detour to the right onto a panoramic ridge overlooking the valley floor. Retrace your steps and continue on a long, roughly level traverse through increasingly sparse alders: a true balcony overlooking the Arnas side valley.

Past a section of easy rocks, carefully cross the steep scree gully carrying the Lera Brook, which has been damaged by recent floods, where the direct path from the Alpe Barnas joins just beforehand.

Beyond a second gully, the path steepens again, with tight zigzags beneath the buttresses of Monte Lera, known as Le Prigioni. A steep climb leads to a hanging valley carved by the Peraciaval Brook, which tumbles into distinctive natural pools. Looking back, the panorama extends from Monte Servin (to the north-east) to Punta Lunella (to the south-east).

Cross the stream on a footbridge and head up the opposite bank alongside a small artificial reservoir at the foot of steep, rocky bluffs streaked with attractive waterfalls. Along the way, you pass beneath a distinctive erratic boulder known as the Roc ‘dla Veja, which looks ready to topple at any moment.

Climbing steadily, pass over easy rocks to emerge onto the beautiful plateau of Pian Sabiunin, enclosed by Monte Lera, Punta Valletta, and the Croce Rossa. On its edge stands the Cibrario Refuge (2,616 m), run by volunteers from CAI Leinì. The refuge, dedicated to Count Luigi Cibrario, a 19th-century mountaineer and politician from Usseglio, dates from 1891 and has been extended several times.
