An "open-air museum" of Memory winding through the paths of the partisan struggle between 1943 and 1945. These thematic itineraries connect mountain pastures, refuges, and villages, telling stories of courage and sacrifice through plaques and memorials dedicated to the values of Freedom and Democracy.

Site overview

The Lanzo, Schioppo, and Ceronda Valleys were the scene of intense partisan struggles between 1943 and 1945. These trails, which once saw the passage of men and women fighting for freedom, now constitute an “open-air museum” of Memory. Walking along these paths means retracing the stages of the Resistance, from the first nuclei of the Garibaldi Brigades to the liberation of the valleys.

The itinerary connects places of high symbolic value: from the mountain pastures that served as refuges and bases for partisan operations, to the villages that suffered roundups and reprisals. Along the route, memorial stones and commemorative plaques tell individual and collective stories of courage, sacrifice, and solidarity of the mountain populations towards the fighters.

The “Trails of Freedom” are not only a hiking destination but a civil journey aimed at keeping the memory of the values of the Constitution and Democracy alive.

How to visit the site

From the square of Traves (Villa locality), follow the road signs for the hamlets of André and Bertolé. Continue to the junction between Via Malerba and Via Fontana, then follow the latter until you find, on the right, a wooden information board with a panel dedicated to the Trails of Freedom (Sentieri della Libertà). Leave the paved road and continue on foot along the grassy track that climbs to the right. After a short stretch, near a wooden building, the path turns into a mule track, enters a broadleaf forest, and begins to run alongside a canal. Passing the last houses, you quickly reach Colle Culmet (717m), characterized by a votive shrine, a picnic area, and a farmhouse; then continue to follow the canal, heading west into the Rio Ordagna valley, which flows to the left of your direction of travel.

Following a gentle slope (falsopiano), climb to the Figiai houses (750m). Ignoring the detour towards Pian Bracon and staying within the valley, leave the course of the canal and re-enter the woods. Continuing on a slight uphill stretch along itinerary 254, you will reach Muande Castagna (736m), the Piazzola hamlet (762m), and the Combacistel locality (824m). Then, cross the Rio Ordagna and begin a decidedly steeper ascent on a narrower but well-marked path. Upon reaching the Bramafam houses (1,095m, 1h 40min), where there is a wooden board without panels, climb the ridge covered with sparse vegetation up to the Colle di Pra’ Lorenzo, indicated by a sign (1,388m, 2h 30min).

Avoiding heading to the right to climb the Uja di Calcante, instead begin the descent towards Viù. Along the way, at a junction, ignore itinerary no. 135 and continue on the path to the hamlet of Salvagnengo. Via a small paved road, continue to descend, passing various groups of houses until you reach the hamlet of Oldri. At the confluence with Strada Provinciale 32, follow the latter uphill to the right and, shortly, you will reach the center of Viù (4h).
