The Sanctuary of the Martiri, built at the beginning of the eighteenth century on the remains of an ancient oratory, stands along the historic road of Lanzo. Immersed in greenery, it preserves the charm of a place of devotion linked to the ancient routes traveled by pilgrims and armies between France and the Po Valley.

Site overview

The Sanctuary is located on the old road of Lanzo and was built at the beginning of the 1700s on the remains of an ancient oratory. The church, immersed in greenery, is a jewel of grace and architectural composure. Although there are no certain historical elements, the “Martyrs” (Martiri) could be the soldiers of the Theban Legion (3rd century AD) who fled the persecution of Maxentius across the Alps from France towards the Canavese area, pursued by enemy soldiers. It was indeed this old road of Lanzo that reaches us from Chivasso, passing from Grosso to Mathi and then turning towards Montebasso, Vallo, up to the Susa Valley. In ancient and medieval times, it was the only road used by armies and pilgrims descending from France towards the Po Valley, Turin, and the Novara and Milan areas.

How to visit the site

The Sanctuary is located in the north-western area of the municipality of Balangero, along the ancient road of the Lanzo Valleys, in a rural area at the edge of the municipal perimeter. From Corso Borla, turn left into Via Lanzo. The Sanctuary is located at the end of the street.
