Parish Church of Santa Anastasia and San Giovanni Evangelista in Chiaves
Between stone, history, and daily life.
Integrated into the heart of the village and part of the rectory complex, the church has for centuries represented a religious and social landmark for the community. Its sober architecture tells of a profound bond with the territory and local tradition.
Site overview
The liturgical hall is incorporated into the rectory complex. The side volumes house some dwellings, created by closing the porticoes at the beginning of the twentieth century. The church has a rectangular plan, with a central nave divided into three bays with side chapels, and ends with a rectangular apse.
The facade faces north, towards the town, with a gabled front divided into three parts, corresponding to the church and the two residential wings added to it. The central part has a smooth plaster finish, painted light yellow, which is in turn divided into three fields by paired pilasters, superimposed on two levels, and crowned by a triangular pediment.
The entrance door is positioned on the central axis, surmounted by a triangular pediment and flanked by two rectangular windows. In the center of the facade, there is a circular opening, flanked by two arched niches.
A clock face is placed in the center of the pediment. The side wings, instead, are made of exposed stone masonry, as are the remaining parts of the side facades of the rectory complex.
The load-bearing structure is made of stone masonry. The double-pitched roof has a wooden frame and a covering of “lose” (stone slabs). Inside, the nave is covered by groined vaults, while the side chapels feature barrel vaults. The apse is also covered by groined vaults.
There is a bell tower, incorporated into the structure of the rectory complex, with a square base and exposed stone masonry structure. The structure rises to the left of the church, at the intersection between the walls of the nave and the apse.
The bell cell at the top is open on all four sides with single-light windows. No structural failures are detected, but there are cracks in the first bay, corresponding to the side chapels. There are also phenomena of degradation caused by wall humidity. Overall, the building is in a fair state of conservation. The church is officiated regularly.
How to visit the site
The church is situated on a hill, in a dominant position relative to the town of Chiaves. It is connected to the small square in the center of the village by a stone stairway of 85 steps or by a road.
