Built in 1855 on Monte Sap at an altitude of 1,215 metres, the Chapel of the Madonna della Neve is a small place of worship rooted in Marian tradition and popular devotion.

Site overview

The Chapel of the Madonna della Neve was built in 1855 on Monte Sap (at 1,215 m above sea level). It was abandoned for over twenty years before being repaired and fitted with a new floor in 1887.

Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snows) is a title through which the Catholic Church venerates Mary, based on the form of devotion called hyperdulia.

It is the traditional and popular name for Mary, Mother of God (Theotokos), as proclaimed by the Council of Ephesus.

Her liturgical feast day is celebrated on August 5th. In commemoration of the miraculous Marian apparition, the Church established the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

How to visit the site

Starting from the square in Givoletto, follow the road through the historic centre and past the church until you see a sign on the right directing to the hamlet of Santa Maria, where the Sanctuary of Maria Ausiliatrice is located near the top of Monte Castello. Descend along the trail on the opposite side to reach a clearing used as a parking area. Continue along the trail past a trial bike zone, then head uphill on the firebreak track on the right. Follow the track until it narrows into a path, then cross a stream (which is dry in summer) to the left. (Avoid the path to the right, as it leads nowhere.) The trail is faint and grassy for a short distance, but stay on the flat until you meet the main trail from Borgonuovo. Turn right and climb the steep, grassy ridge, following the trail and old paint trail markings. As the slope lessens, the trail gradually veers right until it reaches the east ridge descending from Monte Lera. A brief walk along this ridge takes you to the Chapel of the Madonna della Neve at 1,211 m.
