Chapel of the Holy Cross
Where tradition, sacred art, and community life come together.
Situated in the heart of the village, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is a religious, artistic, and civic landmark that hosts cultural events and art exhibitions, bridging historical preservation and contemporary community life.
Site overview
The building is open on three sides, with the north side adjacent to a private residence. Its façade faces northeast. The chapel features a rectangular layout with a single nave, two side chapels accessible from it, and ends in a rectangular apse.
The nave is divided into three bays with barrel vaults and lunettes, while the apse is surmounted by a dome on an elliptical base, supported by four arches.
In the side chapels, the altars dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows are on the right, while those to Saints Luigi Gonzaga and Francis of Assisi are also present. The cycle of the Cross is depicted through the altarpiece, two paintings on the side altars, and three framed frescoes in the vault, culminating with the Triumph of the Cross in the dome.
The building has a load-bearing stone masonry structure, plastered internally and partially exposed on the external elevations. The roof is a double-pitched structure with losa stone covering.
The façade features four pilasters in overlapping orders, topped in the centre by a curvilinear pediment. The entrance portal is centrally located, with an architrave supported by stone pilasters and a lunette above.
The building is in good condition both inside and out. The chapel is used for weekday services and on the feast day celebrated in September. An agreement is also in place with the Town of Corio to use it for cultural and artistic events.
How to visit the site
The chapel faces the south-east side of Corio's main square, just a short walk from the Parish Church of San Genesio Martire.
