Where a small forestry hut used to be, now lies one of the most vibrant viewpoints in the Lanzo Valleys. The Big Bench at Ca' Bianca, part of Chris Bangle's global project, invites you to enjoy the landscape from a towering perspective. It's an easy-to-reach spot, ideal for panoramic picnics amidst birch groves and the sunshine of Monte Basso.
Site overview
In the past, Ca’ Bianca was a small forestry hut, later converted into a recreational spot with tables and a fountain. In 2019, a giant bench was added in a panoramic position, overlooking the entire plain below.
The Big Benches, part of the Big Bench Community Project and created by American designer Chris Bangle, are vibrant installations over two metres tall, positioned in scenic, easily accessible locations.
You can reach the area either by climbing a resurfaced gravel track or by hiking trail no. 95. The loop is recommended, but those not accustomed to walking or without proper footwear for steep paths should consider ascending and descending along the track. The walk begins in the village of Monasterolo di Cafasse and takes you along the sunny side of Monte Basso through scattered birch and pine groves.
Nearby, there is a pillar shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Constructed in 1995 using local stone and topped with a losa roof, it was built through the efforts of the Amici Ca’ Bianca committee and local volunteers from Cafasse. The project also involved the Pro Loco and the municipal council, with funding provided by many residents of Cafasse.
How to visit the site
When you arrive in Monasterolo di Cafasse, turn onto Via Lanzo. Park at the end of the paved road and continue along the nearly flat path until you spot a well-marked sign for "Ca' Bianca" on the left side. After crossing the barrier, follow the trail up to Ca' Bianca. A little way from Ca' Bianca, you'll find Big Bench 78. The hike typically lasts about 45 minutes.
